Change of Ownership
Vehicles registered from 1993 onwards
Post-1993 registered vehicles are dealt with by Vehicle Registration Unit, Shannon, Co. Clare. Our office can only register a change of ownership if the vehicle is being taxed.
Documents to be submitted
- Vehicle Licensing Certificate / Vehicle Registration Certificate (RF101) – Change of Ownership Section on the reverse of the Certificate fully completed by both the seller and the buyer. You will need to ensure that the date of sale and signatures of both parties are fully completed. This document must be forwarded by the seller to the Department of Transport, Shannon, Co. Clare where the ownership will be updated and a new Registration Certificate issued to the new owner of the vehicle.
- If there has been a change of ownership and the new owner wishes to tax the vehicle, the Registration Certificate / Vehicle Licensing Certificate should be submitted to the Motor Tax Office, along with RF100A Motor Tax Renewal Form, fully completed by the new owner of the vehicle, and the relevant fee for taxing. The ownership of the vehicle can be changed by the Motor Tax Office and taxed at the same time and a new Registration Certificate will automatically issue to the new registered owner of the vehicle.
Vehicles registered before 1993
Pre-1993 registered vehicles: (old-style brown Registration / Log Books) are dealt with by the local Motor Tax Office.
Documents to be submitted:
- RF200 Form (available from Motor Taxation Offices) to be fully completed and signed by both seller and buyer
- Registration Book (log book)
Trade-in / Sale to a Garage / Motor Dealer:
- Form RFRF105 to be completed and submitted to Motor Tax Offices and the Vehicle Licensing Certificate/Vehicle Registration Certificate should be submitted to the Garage / Motor Dealer.
Note: Until such time as the Motor Taxation Office or Vehicle Registration Unit in Shannon has been notified of a change of ownership, you continue to be the legal registered owner and as such you are legally liable for any fines or penalties incurred in respect of the vehicle by the new owner.
Imported and Newly Registered Vehicles – first time taxing in Ireland:
RF200 (available from Motor Taxation Offices) to be fully completed and signed by both seller and buyer
- Form rf100 issued by the Revenue Commissioners, fully completed by the new owner of the vehicle (along with any other relevant documentation particular to the vehicle in question)
Note: Until such time as the Motor Taxation Office or Vehicle Registration Unit in Shannon has been notified of a change of ownership, you continue to be the legal registered owner and as such you are legally liable for any fines or penalties incurred in respect of the vehicle by the new owner.
Please note:– In cases where either the seller or buyer of the vehicle is a Garage, the Garage must stamp the reverse of the Vehicle Registration Certificate (form RF101) with their official Garage Stamp.
Incorrect Date of Sale on Vehicle Registration Certificate

Both the current and previously registered owner of the vehicle must send the Department of transport a letter, signed by both parties, outlining the correct sale date. The VRC must also be sent with this letter. Both parties must also send us their identification e.g. copy of driving licence.
The Department of Transports will post a VRC to the new owner with the correct sale date.
