Septic Tank Grants available

Cavan County Council Environment Section staff undertake regular inspections of septic tanks/domestic waste water treatment systems to identify systems that are not meeting the expected standard in specified risk areas. If a system is functioning properly it helps to protect ground and surface water quality, including drinking water sources.

Domestic waste water treatment systems (DWWTS) must not cause a risk to human health or the environment.

A grant may be available to assist in carrying out remediation, repair or upgrading works to, or replacement of, a domestic waste water treatment system.

Grants are available under three separate schemes:

  • DWWTS grant under the National Inspection Plan
  • DWWTS grant in Prioritised Areas for Action
  • DWWTS grant in High Status Objective Catchment Areas.

Use the following link for details on all the schemes available: www.gov.ie/en/publication/6cc1e-domestic-waste-water-treatment-systems-septic-tanks/

One of the grants available caters for treatment systems serving a house that is situated in a High Status Objective Catchment Area.  Access the following link to check if your system is in one of the areas shaded green below using your Eircode: https://housinggovie.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=17278d05d48e4495a7c47c1bb5443ef5

Grants will not be paid towards the normal costs of ensuring a system is working properly, for example: maintaining, servicing or de-sludging a domestic waste water treatment system

The grant scheme is administered by Cavan County Council on behalf of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.  Contact the Environment Section of Cavan County Council for further information, email: environ@cavancoco.ie.
