Registration of private well supplies used as part of commercial or public activities
Do you have a private well supply being used as part of a commercial or public activity?
If you use water from a private water supply as part of a public or commercial activity, you may need to register to get your water checked by Cavan County Council to ensure the water supply is safe for drinking in line with the Drinking Water Regulations 2023.
Premises on our register include, schools, creches, shops, community centres, public houses, food establishments, etc.
If you think that you may need to be on our register for monitoring, or require more information, contact our Environment Department on 049 437 8486.
Please note: Well supplies serving domestic houses do not fall under Cavan County Council’s remit under the Drinking Water Regulations.
Advice to householders served by private well supplies
Although households served by private well supplies do not fall under Cavan County Council’s remit for monitoring, it’s recommended that, at a minimum, your well supply is tested annually for microbiological contamination, and every three years for chemical contamination. A visual inspection is also advised to ensure it is properly sealed and not at risk from contamination. For more tips on checking your well, see www.cavancoco.ie/privatewellsupplies
