Call to back ‘Best Kept Towns’ effort

Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, Cllr Philip Brady has called on the people of Cavan to unite behind Cavan Tidy Towns as Cavan Town competes in the prestigious ‘Ireland’s Best Kept Towns’ competition.

Cavan Town was nominated for the Ireland’s Best Kept Town, an all-island competition jointly organised by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Northern Ireland Amenity Council. Participants are selected based on their performance in the SuperValu TidyTowns competition and Northern Ireland’s ‘Best Kept’ competition. Cavan will be competing in the Large Town category, with judging taking place in May.

“It is an honour for Cavan Town to be selected for this prestigious competition and I hope the people of Cavan Town and local businesses will rally behind our fantastic tidy towns organisation here and help out, whether by volunteering directly, or by keeping the areas around their own homes or premises litter free,” said Cathaoirleach, Cllr Brady.

“This competition is an opportunity for our county town to put its best foot forward and showcase all we as a county have to offer, by raising the profile of Cavan in general. I applaud the efforts of Cavan Tidy Towns in getting to this stage, and wish them the very best of luck in the adjudication next month,” added Cllr Brady.

Tidy Towns volunteers are working hard to ensure the town looks its best in the coming weeks, picking litter and planting flowers, supported by Cavan County Council’s Cavan-Belturbet Municipal District staff, community wardens, and horticulturalist.

Paul Lynch, of Cavan’s Tidy Towns Committee, said “It is an honour for Tidy Towns Cavan to represent County Cavan in this competition and to build on our continued success and rightfully have  Cavan Town recognised as a clean, inviting, environmentally friendly place to live and visit”.

Chief Executive of Cavan County Council, Eoin Doyle, said “As a local authority, we greatly appreciate the efforts of Cavan Tidy Towns, which embody the extraordinary spirit of civic-mindedness and volunteerism that exists in our county. We are happy to support their entry in the Ireland’s Best Kept Towns competition and wish them every success”.

Judges will mark Cavan Town under a number of categories: Presentation of Buildings; Appearance of Approach Roads, Streets and Public Areas; Presentation of Natural Environment; Presentation of Immediate Residential Areas; Tidiness; Comprehensiveness, and General Impression.
