Council Recognised as Employment Leader

Cavan County Council has been recognised as a leader in inclusive employment at the WAM Leader Awards 2023, which took place in August in the Museum of Literature Ireland. 

The WAM Leader Awards are given to employers to recognise their contribution in facilitating WAM placements and promoting the employment of graduates with disabilities for 2022-23.

Willing Able Mentoring (WAM) is a work placement programme which aims to promote access to the labour market for graduates with disabilities and build the capacity of employers to integrate disability into the mainstream workplace.

WAM partnered with 15 major employers in securing over 60 positions for graduates with disabilities in 13 counties. Over 400 applications were made last year with over half of applicants invited for interviews.

Over 230 staff from participating companies engaged in WAM specific training, while another 550 attended WAM Employer events.  WAM also launched the development of a route to permanency for Civil Service and a new partnership with the local government sector.

“Cavan County Council recognises the immense contribution people with disabilities can make to the organisation and we are delighted to continue to partner with Ahead for the Willing Able Mentoring (WAM) Programme,” said Lynda McGavigan, acting Director of Service for Housing, Libraries and Cultural Services, Human Resources, and Corporate Services.

Chief Executive of Cavan County Council Eoin Doyle said, “taking part in the WAM programme has been a very beneficial experience for Cavan County Council and the programme participants who joined Cavan County Council have made a significant contribution to the organisation and to delivering services for the people of Cavan”.
