The President’s visit recognises and acknowledges the significant impact Mullagh native St. Kilian had on this region. This visit presented a unique opportunity to promote County Cavan and to build relationships with Europe. A partnership agreement between Cavan County Council and Kürnach Municipality was signed in 2016 and relations between both regions have gone from strength to strength.
Mayor of Kürnach, Mr Thomas Eberth led the reception for the Cavan delegation and the President of the Kürnach Partnership Committee, Colette Herrmann, a native of Ballyhaise, also welcomed the group to her hometown of Kürnach.
A group of over 80 young musicians from Cavan Town Comhaltas are travelling to Kürnach later this month.
St. Kilian, who was born in Mullagh in 640AD, is the patron Saint of Würzburg Diocese and his relics are carried through the city in a solemn procession on the first Sunday in July each year. In addition to meeting with the President of Ireland, the Cavan County Council delegation, led by Cathaoirleach, Cllr Shane P. O’Reilly, and Chief Executive, Mr Tommy Ryan, met with representatives of Würzburg City Council and visited to Würzburg University to view the original manuscripts of St Kilian.
The Cavan delegation is also the only non-local group permitted to participate in the Kiliani Festival Parade, which is a colourful parade featuring traditional dress, fanfare and music groups, which follows a three-kilometre route through the historic city centre. The Cavan delegation also participated in the procession of the relics of St Kilian to the Cathedral on Sunday morning.
Below is a video posted by Würzburg Diocese of the Procession of St Kilian's Relics, including interviews with Cllrs Winston Bennett and T.P. O'Reilly.
