A delegation from Malta, including Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Carmelo Abela, and Maltese Ambassador to Ireland, H.E. Mr Leonard Sacco, visited Cavan to extend the hand of friendship between Ireland and Malta and to hear first-hand about the impact of Brexit

The Maltese delegation was greeted by Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, Cllr Madeleine Argue, who spoke of the similarities between Ireland and Malta and thanked Minister Abela for his and the Government of Malta's support of Ireland.
Minister Abela thanked the Cathaoirleach for the opportunity to visit the border region and hear of the potential impact of Brexit on communities and industry in County Cavan, and spoke of "the need to build a relationship of trust between the EU27 and the United Kingdom" after Brexit occurs.
The meeting was facilitated by Deputy Brendan Smith, TD who as Chair of the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs Committee, impressed upon the Maltese delegation of the need for continued solidarity with Ireland from its European partners as UK prepares to exit the EU.
